Remember the good ol days back in the early 00s where mobile phones weren’t all smart and life-consuming with just text messages and snake games? In a world where the irony of having the access to everything in your phone disconnects us from everything else; the designers of this super minimalist phone knows that what we need is to just shut off from apps and head back to basics. Designers Joe Hollier and Kaiwei Tang have designed a mobile phone that intentionally lacks features, in hopes of encouraging users to disconnect from the internet.
Called the Light Phone, smartphone users can only make phone calls on the phone inadvertenly disconnect from all the distracting apps that use up a large portion of our daily lives. Hollier and Tang began working on the phone having become disillusioned with the claims that today’s technologically advanced gadgets are supposed to “make our lives better”.
Stripping all the elements of what a smart phone mobile is like, the designers retain the phone to its most basic element and adding a super sleek design to the palm-sized handset with a simple LCD display and a numerical keypad. The only functions it can perform is receiving and making calls. Apps cannot be downloaded, and text messages cannot be sent, but the user gets to use the same phone number as they do on their smartphone.
Would you be willing to swap to this? 😉
