Those Gucci Instagram posts of all-black model casting has finally shone to light. They are casted in the brand’s latest campaign – a tribute to Northern Soul featuring an all-black model cast for their Pre-fall 17 campaign.
The latest images were inspired by last year’s Made You Look exhibition at the Photographer’s Gallery, an exploration of black masculinity and Dandyism. The campaign shots also take notes from influences from iconic 60s photographer Malick Sidibé, renowned for his black and white studio portraits in Mali, and Northern Soul, a 60s movement inspired by black American soul music that made clubs like the Wigan Casino famous. Featuring dancers as well as models, they pull moves true to the splits and backdrops associated with the subculture’s dance style.
Shot by Glen Luchford, the campaign is titled ‘Soul Scene’ featuring only people of color (hurrah!) in a time where the call of diversity and mistreatment of models were rife during the last Paris Fashion Week.
